Low Carb Foods

An Aid to Weight Loss?

You must know what a carbohydrate is in order to understand what constitutes a low carb food. Carbohydrates, or carbs, are actually chemical compounds that create the energy our bodies need to perform.

Polysaccharides are the technical term used to describe complex carbs. Complex carbs take longer to digest than simple carbs that are found in most breads and processed sugar products like cookies, cakes and other treats. Complex carbs are considered a healthier choice like those found in whole grain foods and most vegetables that grow above ground. Both animals and plants naturally produce carbohydrates.

A few years ago, it research found that obesity and consuming carbohydrates were tied to one another. So, at that time, finding low carb alternatives became quite popular. These foods were thought to help people burn off the fat stored in their bodies, instead of the carbohydrates that they had consumed, therefore helping them to lose weight.

Low carb diets often replaced high carbohydrate foods, such as grains, starches and sugars, with those that were higher in fat and protein. They claimed to actually work because insulin levels were reduced, and fat was burned for energy. However, low carb diets have often been debated because they don't always work for each person.

When the United States became introduced to the low carb craze, the food industry quickly began producing low carb foods. In addition, low carb menus began popping up in restaurants. These foods often replaced items such as wheat flour with soy flour, and replaced sugar with such artificial sweeteners as sugar alcohols and sucralose.

You can easily find low carb foods in your local stores, as well as online. Various items include chocolate, cookies, desserts, drinks, pastas, snacks, etc. But, it should be known that low carb foods aren't necessarily healthy. Some manufacturers are creating low carb foods as a way to make money, not as a way to help in your quest to lose weight. Many low carb processed products can contain high fat content that would be counter productive to any weight loss plan. If you do want to try following a low carb diet, it is best to first speak to your doctor.
