Crab

Nothing can compare to the taste of fresh, tender crab meat. So, it’s no surprise to learn that the popular crab industry has been around a long time. For those of you not familiar with crab, there are two basic types: ocean and river. The crab most often bought and consumed is ocean with Pacific and Atlantic being the most popular. The largest crab is the Alaskan King Crab, which can yield an astounding 5 pounds of meat or more.

When purchasing crabs, you can choose to buy them either frozen or live. As with many other varieties of seafood, crabs are often flash frozen prior to being shipped to ensure they retain their freshness. In some instances, they are even pre-cooked so heating is easy. When purchasing live crabs, you can do so at a store or even online. Live crabs can be cooked whole by boiling them in water for just less than 10 minutes.

Every part of a crab, except the head, is considered edible. Cleaning and eating a crab can be easy with just a little practice. The shell can be lifted from the crab’s torso, the claws and legs are able to be split, and, using a knife, nutcracker, or a specially designed tool, you can easily free the meat from the crab’s shell. If maneuvering a whole crab is too difficult, you can always opt to purchase already cleaned and separated lump crab meat, or even meat that is canned. Using the meat to make crab cakes is a perfect way to create a gourmet treat.

Other popular varieties include Snow Crabs and Dungeness from Alaska, as well as Blue Crabs and Soft-shell Crabs.
