Boxes of Chocolate

Luscious Tidbits all in a Box

Who doesn’t enjoy receiving a scrumptious box of chocolates for special occasions such as Christmas, Mother’s Day, or the most popular, Valentine’s Day?

Although some boxes do contain just one variety of chocolate, most offer a wide choice of flavors like caramels, nuts, creams, nougats, and fruit-filled, just to name a few. But, there’s more to just enjoying the chocolate in the box, it is also as much fun to try and guess what flavors they are.

So, where did the wonderful idea for a box of chocolates come from? Well, rumors have stated that Richard Cadbury of England introduced the first box in 1868. Apparently, at that point, he used a painting of his young daughter to decorate a candy box. Cadbury is also credited with the first chocolate candy box for Valentine’s Day.

It wasn’t until 1912 that the popular Whitman Sampler chocolates came into existence, each box graced with a needlepoint sampler. Not only is this box extremely popular even today, but it is also the first to include an index of the chocolate flavors contained inside.
