Aperitifs

Priming Your Taste Buds
You may have heard of the term aperitif, but do you know what it means? An aperitif is a pre-dinner drink that helps to prime your taste buds for the meal.
There are many varieties of aperitifs. Cocktails are popular aperitifs, and they can include daiquiris, Bloody Marys, and martinis. Any type of cocktail made with a white spirit, such as vodka or gin, makes a good aperitif. The most popular cocktail is actually gin mixed with soda.
Other drinks suitable for consumption as an aperitif are light, fruity liquors; vermouths, which are wines that have been infused with spices and herbs; sherries, which are perfect when served with dessert; flavored alcohols, including blends and infusions; champagne; wine; beer; and even wine spritzers.
When drinking an aperitif, it is best to do so in moderation and with discretion. Any heavy drinks should be consumed in moderation so as not to overwhelm the senses. Although, drinking too much may help you to loosen up to the point where there won't be a dull moment during dinner conversation!
A rule of thumb is that aperitifs should be properly chilled, so you perfectly stimulate your appetite. If you remember to do this at the last minute, you can easily place the liquor bottle in the freezer for a mere thirty minutes.
The liquors that work well as aperitifs also work well as gifts. Not only can you buy the bottles separately, but you can also opt to create an aperitif gift basket using several varieties. This is especially perfect for use as a host or hostess gift.
